Charvel

So-Cal

Charvel went through its old work orders, found what players asked for most, and put a pickguard on it.

Summer NAMM, 2008. Charvel, now part of Fender, rolls out three American production guitars built in Corona, California. Two are called San Dimas. The third has a pickguard and a new name: So-Cal.

Side A

A1

The original blasphemy

In 2009, Mick McGregor summed up Charvel in a sentence: the brand “was the original blasphemy of the Fender Stratocaster.”

In the late ’70s, players wanted a Strat body with a faster neck and humbuckers, and a Strat didn’t come that way. So they took their wish lists to Charvel’s shop, and the shop built what they asked for, one work order at a time. Everybody’s guitar was a little different, and everybody’s was theirs.

That was great if you were in Los Angeles and knew who to ask.

A2

Reading the old work orders

In 2002 Fender bought Jackson and Charvel from Akai. Six years later, at Summer NAMM 2008, Charvel launched a USA production line built in Corona: two San Dimas guitars and one So-Cal, at $999. By the reviews a year later, street prices ran anywhere from about $860 to $1,099, depending who you ask.

The recipe was the clever part. The company went back through the old shop’s work orders and pulled the spec people had asked for most: two humbuckers, an alder body, a maple neck with a compound radius, and a Floyd Rose. The So-Cal was that, with a pickguard.

It was a hot rod with nothing extra on it. A DiMarzio Tone Zone at the bridge, a thick, loud humbucker, and an Evolution at the neck. One volume knob and a toggle, no tone control. A one-piece quartersawn maple neck, cut so the grain stands on edge, which keeps it straight and stiff. Black hardware, little Grover tuners, and a gig bag. It was built for turning up, not for fiddling.

Charvel’s own description is short: a So-Cal is “easily identifiable… by its pickguard and Floyd Rose double-locking bridge.” The San Dimas is the sibling without the guard. Same family, different face.

A3

A new color every season

The 2008 So-Cals came in colors that changed every quarter and then retired. Candy Tangerine in July 2008. Pagan Gold. Candy Green. If you liked the one on the wall, you’d better buy it, because next season it would be something else. Somebody asked McGregor how many of each color were made. His answer:

We don’t disclose that.

The American run didn’t last. By early 2011 the rotating colors had stopped, and the So-Cal carried on under the Pro-Mod banner, built in Japan, with the same pickups and the same single knob.

Side B

B1

Same name, new insides

The everyday So-Cal today is the Pro-Mod So-Cal Style 1, built in Mexico. Same outline, same pickguard, but a lot changed underneath. The pickups are now a pair of Seymour Duncan Distortions. Pull up on the volume knob and it splits the humbuckers into single-coils, for a thinner, more Strat-like sound. The tone knob is a no-load pot, which means that turned all the way up, it gets out of the circuit and lets the pickups run wide open. The Floyd Rose is recessed into the body, so you can pull the bar up as well as push it down.

There’s a whole rack of them now. A USA Select So-Cal from Corona goes back to DiMarzios and a Floyd sitting on top of the body. A Japanese MJ So-Cal nods to the late ’80s with 24 frets instead of 22. A Tele-shaped So-Cal Style 2 arrived in 2020. There are signature So-Cals for Henrik Danhage of Evergrey and for Prashant Aswani.

B2

Whitey

It’s easy to look at Jake E. Lee’s white guitar and see a So-Cal. It isn’t one. It’s a mid-’70s Fender Strat, tobacco sunburst when he bought it in 1975. A roommate who painted at Charvel shaved the headstock and painted it white. Two reverse-slant DiMarzio SDS-1s in the middle and neck, a Seymour Duncan JB at the bridge, no vibrato. It’s called Whitey, and there is one of it.

Charvel makes versions now. The USA Signature is, in Charvel’s words, “based on the distinctive white ‘Charvel-ized’ instrument… bought new back in 1975.” A Pro-Mod So-Cal version followed in 2022, with the same JB-and-SDS-1 idea and a hardtail.

In 2026 somebody asked Jake what he’d take out to play live. The answer “would be… my Charvel Jake E Lee Pro-Mod,” the production So-Cal.

Back in 1975 you needed a roommate at Charvel. Now the man who had one plays the model anybody can order tomorrow.

Current production typical = Pro-Mod So-Cal Style 1 HH FR (Mexico). Charvel MSRP $1,249.98; Sweetwater street $969.99 (Vintage White) / $1,069.99 (Gloss Black) this pass. HSS FR E is a sibling SKU (TB-6 plus SSL Custom Flat Strat, 5-way) — not this HH table. USA Select So-Cal Style 1 HSS FR is the Corona flagship throwback at $2,499.99, not this table. 2008 USA Production Model So-Cal Style 1 2H is the named original. Mixed inch/mm flagged.

Construction

The job was a Charvel you could order with a pickguard. San Dimas is the no-guard shop cut. This is the named production hot-rod: So-Cal Style 1.

Not a San Dimas (charvel-san-dimas). Charvel’s shape copy: a So-Cal is “easily identifiable… by its pickguard and Floyd Rose double-locking bridge.” San Dimas Style 1 is the rear-routed, no-guard sibling; catalog year there is 1979. Do not nest this guitar under San Dimas. Not a numbered Japan Model 4 (charvel-model-4) — basswood, three toggles, Kahler, 1986. Not a Jackson Soloist (jackson-soloist) — neck-through, 1984. Not a DK24, not a Guthrie Govan. So-Cal Style 2 is the Tele-shape So-Cal (NAMM 2020), not this table. Superstrat is a genre label, not a Charvel SKU.

Wayne Charvel’s repair shop, Azusa 1974, then San Dimas. Grover Jackson buys in 1978. USA shop bolt-ons run until American production ceases in 1986; Japan numbered Charvels take the catalog. Fender MIC buys Jackson/Charvel from Akai in 2002 (MusicRadar, July 2009). The So-Cal name is not a 1979 shop badge. It is the Fender-era production name for the pickguard Strat-shape.

2008. Jackson Charvel Manufacturing, Harmony Central, 21 June 2008: summer debut of three U.S. production guitars — San Dimas Style 1 2H, San Dimas Style 2 2H, So-Cal Style 1 2H. Premier Guitar, Summer NAMM 2008: USA Production Model Series, Corona, $999. The So-Cal is the one with a pickguard. Harmony Central: alder, black polyurethane, one-piece maple, 12"–16" compound, Floyd Rose, Grover mini-tuners, black hardware, gig bag; DiMarzio Tone Zone bridge, Evolution neck. San Dimas Style 1/2 in that same launch got Duncan JB / ’59 and no guard. Keep the split.

Mick McGregor, MusicRadar, 15 July 2009: Charvel “was the original blasphemy of the Fender Stratocaster.” Late-seventies players wanted faster necks and Strat bodies with humbuckers. The shop pulled work orders for the most-requested spec: two humbuckers, alder, maple compound, Floyd. Quartersawn one-piece maple, 305–406 mm (12"–16") conical radius, 1.53° neck pitch on that So-Cal. Tone Zone 17.3k. Locking nut screwed into the neck without through-bolts. Quarterly colors, then retired: July 2008 So-Cal in Candy Tangerine (Harmony Central). MusicRadar’s sample was Pagan Gold. MusicRadar street $859.99 / £999. Legendary Tones, 15 August 2009: $1,099, Gotoh on that black sample. Keep $999, $859.99, and $1,099. 2008 money, not 2026 street.

2011. MusicRadar, 4 February 2011: USA Production Models stop rotating colors; San Dimas Style 2 retired; Style 1 San Dimas and So-Cal remain under the Pro-Mod banner, built in Japan, not the USA. Spec of that Japan So-Cal matches the 2009 USA review: Tone Zone DP-155, Evolution DP-158, one volume, three-way toggle. £727 with SKB case. Do not date a Mexico Pro-Mod from a Corona C-serial.

Then the living guitar changes under the same name. Recessed Floyd Rose 1000, not the 2008 non-recessed unit (Music Zoo on a 2008 Candy Green). Seymour Duncan Distortion TB-6 / SH-6N on the HH table, not DiMarzio. Push/pull coil split and a no-load tone instead of one knob and a toggle. Graphite rods. Heel-mount spoke wheel. Licensed Fender Strat headstock. Wikipedia: current Pro-Mod from Ensenada; dealer sheets print MX. Sweetwater serial sample MC250844. Japan Pro-Mod is the 2011 chapter, not this cart.

USA Select So-Cal Style 1 HSS FR is the Corona throwback: alder, 1-ply guard, quartersawn maple, 22 jumbo, DiMarzio Super Distortion DP100 and HS-2 DP116, 5-way “super” blade, one volume, Original Floyd non-recessed, est. U.S. street $2,499.99. Same money as USA Select San Dimas Style 1. Different guitar: this one has the guard.

MJ So-Cal Style 1 HSS FR M is Japan homage, not 2008 Corona and not this table. Charvel: “Harkening back to the late '80s when Charvel guitars were manufactured exclusively in Japan.” Alder, 24 jumbo (not 22), Duncan JB TB-4 plus Custom Flat Strat SSL-6, Gotoh GE1996T, est. U.S. street $1,679.99. Do not copy 24 frets onto a Pro-Mod So-Cal.

Pro-Mod Plus is a later trim on this silhouette, not a second encyclopedia slug. Hardtail HT6 string-through exists beside the Floyd. Signatures that keep the So-Cal name (Jake E. Lee, Henrik Danhage, Prashant Aswani PA28) are named objects, not this HH FR table. Satchel’s living Charvel is a DK22, not a So-Cal.

Classic vs current: 2008 USA So-Cal Style 1 2H — Corona alder, pickguard, Tone Zone / Evolution, one volume, toggle, Grover, non-recessed Floyd, quartersawn maple, 22 frets — against the Mexico Pro-Mod HH FR you can order from charvel.com in 2026: same silhouette, Duncan Distortion pair, coil-split, no-load tone, recessed Floyd 1000, graphite rods.

Players

Do not steal San Dimas shop customs, Soloist players, or Guthrie Govan (DK24). Satchel (Steel Panther) is a DK22 Bengal, not a So-Cal (Guitar World, 15 August 2022; Charvel Satchel page). Jim Root’s Christmas guitar was a Model 1.

Jake E. Lee. The white guitar people mean is not a factory So-Cal. Guitar World (Paul Riario, 4 February 2015): a mid-1970s Fender Strat, tobacco sunburst, bought 1975; roommate who painted at Charvel shaved the headstock and painted it white — “Whitey.” Reverse-slant DiMarzio SDS-1s in middle and neck, Seymour Duncan JB bridge, hardtail. Charvel’s own copy: the USA Signature is “based on the distinctive white ‘Charvel-ized’ instrument… bought new back in 1975.” Ash So-Cal Style 1, Pearl White with lavender hue, 21 medium jumbo, quartersawn maple, Gotoh pearl buttons. Est. U.S. street $3,699.99. Pro-Mod So-Cal Style 1 HSS HT RW, 2022 (Blabbermouth, 30 April 2022): alder, 21 jumbo, same JB / SDS-1 idea, hardtail; est. U.S. street $1,299.99. Guitar World (Andrew Daly, 15 April 2026): the guitar for live “would be… my Charvel Jake E Lee Pro-Mod [So-Cal Style 1 HSS HT RW].” The 2026 Blue Burst Pro-Mod San Dimas Style 1 is the other plate. Do not flatten Whitey onto a 2008 production So-Cal.

Henrik Danhage (Evergrey). Living Limited Edition Signature Pro-Mod So-Cal Style 1, White Relic, ash, HS (Duncan JB TB-4 bridge, DiMarzio Area 67 DP419CR neck), top-mount Floyd 1000, reverse licensed Strat headstock. Charvel / dealer street $1,699.99. Manufacturer copy plus a current SKU. Session-to-guitar credits for named Evergrey sides are unpublished here.

Also known to play stays short. Prashant Aswani’s PA28 is a named So-Cal signature on charvel.com. None invented.

Rarity

You can buy a new So-Cal tomorrow. Pro-Mod, Pro-Mod Plus, MJ, USA Select, and signatures all coexist. Regular production, not a numbered custom-shop census.

Charvel does not publish So-Cal unit totals. None invented. Premier Guitar, Summer NAMM 2008, McGregor on the quarterly colors: “We don’t disclose that.” Serials date a guitar. They don’t count a run. That is why a first-year census is unknown, not the chapter.

What is actually thinner: first-year 2008 USA Production Model So-Cal Style 1 2H, especially the quarterly candies (Candy Tangerine, Pagan Gold, Candy Green) before Pro-Mod moved the name to Japan. Complete originals with the Tone Zone / Evolution set and the non-recessed Floyd still in. A refin, a swapped Duncan set, or a Mexico Pro-Mod is a different guitar. 1979–86 San Dimas shop objects are finite, and they are not this name.
